Unite , which represents thousands of workers at easyJet, has begun a ballot of no confidence in the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chief Operating Officer Peter Bellew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ballot of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s membership at easyJet is in direct response to Mr Bellew\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company is proposing to make around 1,290 cabin crew redundant as well as close its regional bases in Newcastle, Stansted and Southend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite’s members are angry that while their\u00c2\u00a0jobs and incomes at the airline are under attack,\u00c2\u00a0easyJet paid \u00c2\u0141174m in dividends to shareholders\u00c2\u00a0at the start of the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has also secured a government funded load of \u00c2\u0141600 million yet is pressing on with a large-scale cuts and closure programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the proposed job losses and base closures, Unite members are angry at how Mr Bellew, who has recently arrived at easyJet from Ryanair has misjudged the start of the Covid-19 crisis by criticising the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhype going on around the virus\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and encouraging \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbusiness as usual\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They has also criticised how he has attempted a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098smash and grab\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of cabin crew pay, terms and conditions and has tried to bypass easyJet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recognised trade unions Unite and pilots’ union BALPA, by proposing \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCoronavirus\u00c2\u00a0Co-operation agreements\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 directly to staff, who categorically rejected them.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional officer for Unite Lindsey Olliver said,\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInitiating a vote of no confidence in a company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chief operating officer is not something Unite undertakes lightly but the strength of feeling among our members is overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members are angered by the scope of the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals and the far-reaching impact this will have, not just on the individuals affected but on local communities whose livelihoods rely on work created by easyJet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s continued operation in and out of the bases earmarked for closure,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is deep concern that the base closures have been predetermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bClearly the responsibility for the future size and scope of the\u00c2\u00a0operation fall within Peter Bellew\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remit and these decisions appear to be driven by him.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n
