{"id":23187,"date":"2020-08-11T15:12:20","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T14:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=23187"},"modified":"2020-08-11T15:12:21","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T14:12:21","slug":"adequate-sick-pay-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=23187","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Adequate sick pay&#8217; call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Workers who need to self-isolate at a Bakkavor dessert factory in Newark, Nottinghamshire, where there has been a coronavirus outbreak must be provided with\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098adequate sick pay\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, Unite said on Tuesday (August 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite, which has more than 150 members at the site, said the factory must increase sick pay from the statutory minimum of \u00c2\u014195.85 a week that its low-paid workers currently receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to do so risks staff facing the\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098stark choice\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0of working while potentially infected or being unable to pay for food, rent or other bills, the union said.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite said it is in contact with the factory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management and is\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098satisfied\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0with the onsite health and safety precautions being taken, but warned that it is\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098monitoring the situation closely\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0and will not hesitate to hold Bakkavor to account if staff are put at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite regional officer Mick Orpin said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLike many other low paying employers in food manufacturing, the Bakkavor factory in Newark does not provide company sick pay for its workers.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNot only is this unfair given how hard its staff work, it increases the risk of coronavirus transmission within the workplace \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Bakkavor must provide adequate sick pay to ensure this doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t happen.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bStaff should not be faced with the stark choice of self-isolating on a radically reduced wage or hoping for the best and going into work because they can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t afford not to,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is in contact with the factory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management and is satisfied with the onsite health and safety measures that have been put in place.
