{"id":2328,"date":"2014-11-26T15:28:18","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T15:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2328"},"modified":"2014-11-26T15:28:18","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T15:28:18","slug":"victory-insulting-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2328","title":{"rendered":"Victory after insulting offer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>When management of Trelleborg, a Swedish-owned engineering firm, offered its Leicester workers in Beymont Leys a 2p an hour pay rise, the Unite members had decided they had had enough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOver 160 workers, who specialise in manufacturing specialist parts for trains, construction vehicles and boats, took strike action last week, from Wednesday through Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nFurther industrial action was planned this week but was called off after a settlement was reached yesterday (Tuesday November 25) and unanimously accepted by members following a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe original offer \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a pay rise from 1.5 per cent to 1.7 per cent \u00e2\u20ac\u201c angered the factory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers, who argued that they had already suffered a pay freeze last year, while at the same time, the firm had just secured a lucrative contract with Derby train maker Bombardier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nTrelleborg management had also threatened to do away with shop floor workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00c2\u0141600 annual bonus, meaning the supposed \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpay rise\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 would amount to a decided pay cut.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nTo add insult to injury, the company had reported record profits in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut the new deal agreed yesterday demonstrates the extent to which coordinated strike action can make a remarkable difference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn the new pay offer, Trelleborg\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Leicester workers will get a 16p an hour pay increase, backdated from January 1 of this year. They will also receive a one-off \u00c2\u0141300 payment at Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nFor 2015, workers will receive a 19p per hour pay rise, with additional payments at Christmas based on CPI. Workers may also receive a retention bonus of up to \u00c2\u0141900.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite regional officer Lakhy Mahal said Trelleborg workers were delighted by the victory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur organised efforts just go to show what solid resolve from workers standing firmly together can accomplish,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe had strong support from the community as well, in addition to encouragement from our sister unions in Sweden and the United States,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir messages of solidarity helped us to keep going strong while we were out in the bitter cold over the last week.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMahal said he was happy that management \u00e2\u20ac\u015btook a common sense approach\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe very much look forward to working closely with Trelleborg management going forward,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When management of Trelleborg, a Swedish-owned engineering firm, offered its Leicester workers in Beymont Leys a 2p an hour pay rise, the Unite members had decided they had had enough. &nbsp; Over 160 workers, who specialise in manufacturing specialist parts for trains, construction vehicles and boats, took strike action last week, from Wednesday through Friday.
