Unite has today (August 27) revealed evidence of potential widespread\u00c2\u00a0jobs discrimination among British Airways cabin crew based at London Gatwick.<\/p>\n

The airline, which has been labelled a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098national disgrace\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by MPs, has pressed ahead with its plans to fire and rehire its workforce, also making thousands of staff redundant.<\/p>\n

Unite had raised concerns with BA that the airline\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s planned redundancy selections could negatively impact the already low representation of BAEM workers among cabin crew at London Gatwick (7 per cent before the redundancies, compared to 13 per cent nationally and 40 per cent in London).<\/p>\n

Unite called on\u00c2\u00a0British Airways to conduct an Equality Impact Assessment before making job cuts but the airline refused to cooperate with the union. Unite conducted its own Equality Impact survey which the union described as \u00e2\u20ac\u015btruly shocking\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Well under\u00c2\u00a0half (41 per cent) of workers who identify as white have been made compulsorily redundant or have been demoted.\u00c2\u00a0The majority (61 per cent) of BAEM flying staff respondents have been made compulsorily redundant.<\/p>\n

Redundant or demoted <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Results also showed that there are now no\u00c2\u00a0black on-board Customer Service Managers (CSMs). The majority have been made compulsorily\u00c2\u00a0redundant\u00c2\u00a0and one has been demoted; 80 per cent of mixed race cabin crew who responded to the survey have been\u00c2\u00a0made compulsorily redundant; 67 per cent of\u00c2\u00a0Asian\u00c2\u00a0crew have been made compulsorily redundant and 83 per cent of British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Muslim flying staff have either been\u00c2\u00a0made compulsorily redundant or demoted.<\/p>\n

The Unite equality impact assessment also found that all the CSMs who are under 25\u00c2\u00a0have been selected for redundancy or have been demoted.\u00c2\u00a0All CSMs with a disability who participated in the survey have been made redundant or demoted as well as 71 per cent of cabin crew employees who are caring for a family member with a disability.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s findings are truly shocking and we are calling on the airline to swiftly assess the disproportionate impact project\u00c2\u00a0fire and rehire is\u00c2\u00a0having on BAEM staff, Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur survey clearly reveals that compulsory redundancies have disproportionately impacted these workers at Gatwick.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese shocking findings are in\u00c2\u00a0addition to the terrible treatment that\u00c2\u00a0all BA staff are being subjected to.\u00c2\u00a0Britain is\u00c2\u00a0proudly diverse but\u00c2\u00a0our national flag carrier stands accused of potential widespread jobs discrimination amongst its Gatwick cabin crew.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Harish Patel Unite national BAEM equalities officer added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite called on BA to conduct an equality impact\u00c2\u00a0assessment\u00c2\u00a0before it\u00c2\u00a0pressed ahead with its forced\u00c2\u00a0redundancies, which we have been dedicated to preventing, but the airline refused to work with us.\u00c2\u00a0The survey found that BAEM workers, the disabled and younger staff have all been disproportionately impacted.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
