{"id":23461,"date":"2020-09-03T12:20:35","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T11:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=23461"},"modified":"2020-09-03T15:47:33","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T14:47:33","slug":"stop-this-attack-on-workers-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=23461","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Stop this attack on workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite, the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s principal aviation union, has reacted with deep concern following reports that Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL) is to begin the formal process of firing and rehiring workers on vastly inferior pay and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/coronavirus-heathrow-begins-consulting-on-frontline-job-cuts-12061806\">Reports suggest<\/a> that the company has today (Wednesday 2 September) issued a formal section 188 notice to begin a consultation process which would result in workers being fired and rehired on inferior contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The action of Heathrow airport follow negotiations between HAL and Unite last month on <a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2020\/august\/industrial-action-not-out-of-the-question-at-heathrow-as-greed-not-need-forces-huge-pay-cuts-on-workers\/\">the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals<\/a> to cut pay by 24 per cent for some workers, slash allowances, impose inferior conditions and to also close the company pension scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unite the union is currently formally putting the proposals to the workforce in a consultative ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHAL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions are extremely unhelpful and further undermine confidence in the industry,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional co-ordinating officer Wayne King.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members have worked tirelessly throughout Covid-19 pandemic to conduct industrial relations via the media in such a brutish manner is designed to create fear and panic in a group of key workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHAL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions have made already difficult negotiations even more fraught.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is currently balloting its members on the proposals HAL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions demonstrate that it is not prepared to allow democracy to run its course.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt a time when Unite is working hard to persuade the government to follow the lead of other European nations and provide specific financial support to the aviation sector to ensure that the industry and workers can survive the pandemic and thrive in the future, these actions are distinctly unhelpful.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>King continued,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt should not be forgotten that HAL is an incredibly wealthy company at the start of the pandemic it boasted of a \u00c2\u01413.2bn war chest.
