Despite this the company is still refusing to provide adequate sick pay to workers who need to self-isolate, a move Unite says increases the risk of another outbreak.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banham Poultry\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s parent company,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chesterfield Poultry, turned over more than \u00c2\u0141120 million in the year ending June 2019, making gross profits of more than \u00c2\u014132 million.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public health officials have stated that the factory followed guidelines, however three members of staff&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-norfolk-54091419\" target=\"_blank\">told the BBC<\/a>&nbsp;that symptomatic staff had turned up for work because they could not afford to live on \u00c2\u014195.85 statutory sick pay.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on condition of anonymity the workers said staff would \u00e2\u20ac\u015bstruggle\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to live on SSP with one stating that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpeople were afraid to take sick leave, because sick pay is so low\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although conditions within refrigerated meat processing factories have been cited as a risk factor for coronavirus transmission, Unite has warned for months that there is also a direct correlation between the treatment of migrant staff as&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2020\/june\/link-between-migrant-worker-exploitation-and-covid-19-meat-processing-outbreaks-must-be-addressed\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bdisposable assets\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/a>&nbsp;and the spread of the disease in such environments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly true in meat processing factories that do not provide&nbsp;staff that need to self-isolate with company sick pay or any other form of financial support, as it&nbsp;increases the danger of individuals with Covid-19&nbsp;going into work because they cannot afford to take time off.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following pressure from Unite a number of food processing companies have changed their sick pay policies during the pandemic, including&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2020\/june\/2-sisters-food-group-announcement-is-welcomed-by-unite\/\" target=\"_blank\">2 Sisters in Llangefni<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2020\/july\/rowan-reversal-of-sick-pay-stance-good-news-in-fight-against-covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rowan Foods in Wrexham<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2020\/august\/bakkavor-commits-to-full-pay-for-self-isolating-newark-workers-following-unite-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bakkavor in Newark<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite regional officer Miles Hubbard said, &#8220;Food processing employers that poor pay combined with a lack of company sick pay risks staff having to choose between self-isolating or hoping for the best and going into work because they cannot afford to be ill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Refusing to provide adequate sick pay is unjust in any circumstances, but particularly so during a pandemic.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/news\/tuc-more-4-10-workers-would-be-plunged-financial-hardship-if-forced-self-isolate\" target=\"_blank\">risks failure<\/a>&nbsp;unless ministers boost SSP and ensure everyone is eligible for it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warning comes as new polling reveals that more than 4 in 10 workers would be plunged into financial hardship if forced to self-isolate for two weeks on SSP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TUC general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bEmployers must do their civic duty and make sure workers can self-isolate on full pay.
