{"id":23631,"date":"2020-09-14T10:16:59","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T09:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=23631"},"modified":"2020-09-14T10:21:17","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T09:21:17","slug":"chancellor-dont-walk-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=23631","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor \u00e2\u20ac\u201c don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t walk away"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 152<sup>nd<\/sup> TUC conference in London may be very different as it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s being held on line \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but the messages trade unions including Unite are making are crystal clear \u00e2\u20ac\u201c workers cannot be made to be the victims of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of her speech to the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098virtual Congress\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 at 11 am this morning, TUC general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady will urge Chancellor Rishi Sunak to work with the trade union movement to prevent a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcatastrophe of mass unemployment\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 before it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s too late; and she will reveal that 2m key workers would benefit from a minimum wage rise \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and will demand the increases as planned for 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Job retention scheme must stay\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a direct appeal to the Chancellor, O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady will say, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnions pushed for the jobs retention scheme. Millions of livelihoods were saved \u00e2\u20ac\u201c both employees and the self-employed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFrom this Thursday (September 17) it will be just 45 days before the JRS ends. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0notice period that companies have to give if they intend to make mass redundancies.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the government doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t act we face a tsunami of job losses.\u00c2\u00a0So my\u00c2\u00a0message to the Chancellor is this, we worked together once before. We are ready to work with you again\u00c2\u00a0&#8211; if\u00c2\u00a0you are serious about stopping the catastrophe of mass unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bRishi Sunak: stand by working families \u00e2\u20ac\u201c don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t walk away.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>The Job Retention scheme must stay. O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady will say, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe pandemic isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t scheduled to end in October so neither should state support for jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so much better to keep people working, paying their taxes, spending and helping to rebuild the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe price of unemployment is always too high. And it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s always paid by ordinary working families.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why we are proposing a new job protection and skills deal &#8211; a three-way bargain.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEmployers must\u00c2\u00a0bring\u00c2\u00a0people back, starting on shorter hours.\u00c2\u00a0 During downtime workers must take part in training and up-skilling.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd for the time they are not working, the state will subsidise wages, on condition that employers continue to pay at least 80 per cent of the normal rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhen the crisis began, the Chancellor said he would do \u00e2\u20ac\u0098whatever it takes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. He must keep that promise.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSome will ask can the country afford to do it? The answer is &#8211; we can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t afford not to.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>National minimum wage <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TUC analysis published today (Monday September 14) shows that 2.1m key workers currently earn below \u00c2\u01419.21 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the proposed new rate for the National Minimum Wage that is due come into force in April 2021, and would certainly benefit from the planned increase.<\/p>\n<p>The union body says putting the brake on that rise would be no way to recognise their dedication and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>Demanding the minimum wage rise goes ahead as planned, O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady will say, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCoronavirus is no leveller.\u00c2\u00a0It\u00c2\u00a0has exposed huge inequality in modern Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHard work should pay for everyone, no matter who you are or what kind of job you do. Yet many of those who kept this country going through the crisis don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get the respect they deserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey do valuable, skilled work. But they are short changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe minimum wage \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the wage of two million key workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c must rise as planned. Ministers: don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t punch down.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bKey workers have shown courage and dedication.
