The appointment of former transport secretary Chris Grayling \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who once awarded a \u00c2\u014113.8m cross channel ferry contract to a company with no ferries \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to a \u00c2\u0141100,000 a year part time advisory role for Hutchinson Ports has been branded an \u00e2\u20ac\u0098insult\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite said the \u00c2\u0141275 an hour role is a\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098slap in the face\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0for hourly paid Felixstowe port staff who have had their Christmas bonus cancelled and undergone detrimental shift changes to help Hutchison Ports weather the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parliamentary register of MPs’ interests states that Grayling anticipates that he will spend around seven hours a week working as a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098strategic adviser\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to Hutchinson Ports.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MP for Epsom and Ewell became known as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098failing Grayling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 during his time in government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Labour Party calculated that he wasted around \u00c2\u01412.7bn of taxpayers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cash<\/a>, including \u00c2\u01412bn lost on the collapse of the Virgin Trains east coast franchise and \u00c2\u0141437m on the disastrous privatisation of the probation service.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite, which has more than 2,000 members at Felixstowe port, said Hutchinson Ports \u00e2\u20ac\u0098clearly has money to burn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0if it can afford to spend \u00c2\u0141100,000 on an advisor once described as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098worst transport secretary of all time\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite regional officer Miles Hubbard said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMr Grayling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s appointment by Hutchinson Ports is a slap in the face to its Felixstowe workforce. While still serving as an MP, Mr Grayling will pocket nearly \u00c2\u01412,000 a week for just seven hours work.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
