{"id":2387,"date":"2014-12-03T13:10:37","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T13:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2387"},"modified":"2014-12-03T13:10:37","modified_gmt":"2014-12-03T13:10:37","slug":"farcical-pay-disparity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2387","title":{"rendered":"Farcical pay disparity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Imagine doing the same exact job as a colleague\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsame title, same skill level, and same daily tasks\u00e2\u20ac\u201dfor a lower pay rate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a situation London bus drivers often find themselves in, where compensation is dictated by 18 different contractors, all with varying rates of pay for sometimes driving the same exact route.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why more than 20,000 of Unite&#8217;s bus driver members will today (December 3) begin voting on whether to take industrial action, in a bid to secure one London-wide agreement covering pay, terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While London\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tube drivers have one single collective pay deal, the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bus drivers are at the mercy of pay negotiations among the 18 different companies that contract the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bus services. These uneven negotiations lead to blatantly unfair disparities in pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A refusal by the bus operators to address the issue has led to pay gaps of over \u00c2\u01412 an hour for new starters opening up with pay varying from \u00c2\u01419.30 to \u00c2\u014111.46 an hour depending on the company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ballot will close Thursday (December 18), making it possible that industrial action could begin in the New Year.
