{"id":23997,"date":"2020-09-30T16:20:29","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T15:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=23997"},"modified":"2020-09-30T16:20:30","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T15:20:30","slug":"mass-unemployment-still-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=23997","title":{"rendered":"Mass unemployment still looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Job Support Scheme measures announced on September 24 will provide some relief for some workers but more will need to be done to prevent a mass unemployment crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The details will need closer scrutiny, but there were some noticeable gaps. These \u00e2\u20ac\u0098dogs that didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t bark\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 included the creation of jobs, training and reskilling, and improvements and increases to Universal Credit and statutory sick pay. There is also a need for comprehensive packages of sector support.<\/p>\n<p>There seems to be quite a reliance on the goodwill of employers. However, as\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/media\/3063\/unite_coming-out-of-c19_what-next_headline-report_final_may-2020.pdf\">Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s research<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0earlier on in the pandemic revealed, whilst some employers who will do the right thing and act responsibly (including working with unions to keep people in work and earning), others will behave recklessly and seek to take advantage of the crisis. Low paid and precarious workers will be particularly vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of mass unemployment still looms and more needs to be done. And urgently. We need a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098National Recovery Council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, bringing together government, business and unions to plan for a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/ABetterRecovery?page=1\">better recovery<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and build a sustainable economy with decent jobs and fair rewards.<\/p>\n<p>The Chancellor cancelled the Budget planned for later this year.
