Here are this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>HEROES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Unite member Kofi Opoku<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week Unite paid special tribute to Unite member and bus driver Kofi Opoku &#8211; who died from coronavirus earlier this week amid the second wave of the pandemic. Exactly what value are they placing on a human life?&#8221; &#8211; Unite&#8217;s John Murphy.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XnmfJxOCqx\">https:\/\/t.co\/XnmfJxOCqx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d Unite the union: join a union (@unitetheunion) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unitetheunion\/status\/1314516204065820672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 9, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Caerphilly County Borough Council and Unite&#8217;s Unity over Division campaign<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Unity over Division (UoD) campaign has received yet another boost after Caerphilly County Borough Council in Wales became the second employer to sign the campaign\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workplace charter this week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the first ever local authority in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also the first time that other unions have jumped on board to embrace the Unite initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite, GMB and Unison signed the charter with Caerphilly County Borough Council on Tuesday (October 6) which has committed all parties to work together to promote a more tolerant and inclusive place of work, with a radical vision of equality at its heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite regional equalities officer Jo Galazka said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe hope this is the start of something big to encourage other local authorities to do the same. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCaerphilly Council is the biggest employer in the area and they recognise the role they have. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not just in the workplace \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wider than that. People look to the council as the moral compass; they look to them for guidance and a steer on anything that may be happening in our communities. For example one area that Unite\/Mental Health Nurses Association has been working on is the distressing research that shows female nurses, pre-Covid-19, had a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adaywithdave.wordpress.com\/2020\/08\/13\/mhnjournal-lpo-update-august2020\/\">risk of suicide 23 per cent above the risk in women in other occupations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhilst our members have been less able to come together to support each other in person, we have developed new resources for members so they can come together virtually including our popular weekly #mhTV on the Unite\/MHNA Facebook page. There are dangers as well as opportunities for workers and it is in everyone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interest to ensure homeworking is introduced properly and fairly. They are as insensitive as they are ill informed and only serve to show how out of touch government is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAviation workers throughout the UK are worried sick about their future and quite literally don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know if they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll have a job next week,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTens of thousands of aviation workers have already lost their jobs. It provides these services to internationally recognised companies, including Amazon, ASOS, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, IKEA, Nestle, Peloton, Starbucks, Target, Verizon and Walmart.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/xpodotcom.azureedge.net\/xpo\/files\/s1\/XPO_May_2020_Company_Profile-2.pdf\">XPO operates in 30 countries with 97,000 employees<\/a>and 1,506 locations. XPO<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/02\/10\/1982649\/0\/en\/XPO-Logistics-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2019-Results.html#:~:text=For%20the%20full%20year%202019%2C%20the%20company%20reported%20total%20revenue,with%20%24390%20million%20for%202018.\">reported more than $16 billion in total revenue<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019, and its billionaire CEO, Bradley Jacobs, made $26 million the same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report is the first to examine the logistics company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s treatment of thousands of workers worldwide. In addition to revealing a negligent Covid-19 response and deadly outbreaks in its facilities, the report details how XPO subjects its employees to wage theft and exploitation, hazardous work environments riddled with health and safety violations, pregnancy and gender discrimination, sexual harassment and extreme anti-union tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDeaths.
