As\u00c2\u00a0the Jobs Retention Scheme closes\u00c2\u00a0the leader of the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading trades\u00c2\u00a0union has called on the government to give an exhausted country some hope by\u00c2\u00a0bringing forward a plan for the protection of health, jobs and incomes.<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary\u00c2\u00a0Len McCluskey said today (October 31), \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith no certainty that this hideous virus can be brought under control in the near future, and millions of UK people living under further restrictions, we once more appeal to the prime minister to do more for the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers.\u00c2\u00a0 The absence of any concerted government\u00c2\u00a0plan to protect jobs and incomes is compiling the suffering caused by this disease.<\/p>\n

Rampaging unemployment <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur communities face a winter of shrunken incomes and punishing uncertainty so we call upon the government to flex the vast\u00c2\u00a0muscles of the state to invest against rampaging unemployment and the human misery that entails.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGive us the plan which shows that this government grasps the urgency of this moment and that it is prepared to be proactive in preventing industrial destruction and mass poverty.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe low waged cannot survive on two-thirds of the minimum wage. The jobs support scheme is simply not adequate and will leave working people with seriously depleted incomes.\u00c2\u00a0 The self-employed cannot survive with no income.\u00c2\u00a0 The newly unemployed cannot wait five weeks for Universal Credit.\u00c2\u00a0The sick cannot isolate on the pennies of sick pay.\u00c2\u00a0 And our businesses cannot recover\u00c2\u00a0with chaotic\u00c2\u00a0on off-on lockdowns and when the demand for goods and services in strategically significant industries is in freefall.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAll these things must be addressed with urgency.<\/p>\n

‘Exhausted and fearful’<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe country is exhausted and fearful.\u00c2\u00a0 It desperately needs to know that there is a way through this that will not see millions of people suffer further.\u00c2\u00a0 Employers and workers need to know that this government has the appetite and aptitude to do what must be done to protect public health, jobs and incomes.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAcross the Channel, the French and German governments are safeguarding against horrific economic shock to their people by rolling out long-term investment plans.\u00c2\u00a0UK workers deserve the same, not \u00e2\u20ac\u0098the sticking plaster until Spring approach\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 favoured by our government.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis country has suffered the greatest health and economic hurt of any major European country.\u00c2\u00a0 It is absolutely\u00c2\u00a0imperative,\u00c2\u00a0therefore, that the government does everything, pulling every lever at its disposal\u00c2\u00a0to stop this pandemic pulling us down into a dreadful, generational depression.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow is\u00c2\u00a0not the\u00c2\u00a0time to let party\u00c2\u00a0ideology triumph over the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s duty to protect our people. Give our citizens\u00c2\u00a0some security and hope \u00e2\u20ac\u201c bring forward a plan to protect and recover health, jobs and incomes.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
