{"id":24588,"date":"2020-11-11T17:00:09","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T17:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=24588"},"modified":"2020-11-11T17:00:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T17:00:13","slug":"hackney-parking-wardens-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=24588","title":{"rendered":"Hackney parking wardens win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Unite said the decision by Hackney council to bring its more than 130 parking wardens back \u00e2\u20ac\u0098in-house\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098the way to go\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for those London boroughs still wedded to the outsourced, privatisation model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The borough council decided this week that the wardens, also known as civil enforcement officers (CEOs), employed by Apcoa Parking (UK) Ltd, should come back under the local authority when the contract ends in March 2022. Work on this process will begin now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite said that its long-running campaign to bring back under council control the troubled Apoca contract, which has been dogged by industrial disputes over pay and personal safety issues,&nbsp; is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a sign post\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for other London boroughs to shed their outsourced CEO contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to council documents, ditching the Apoca contract would result in \u00e2\u20ac\u0098certain savings\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, including no longer paying performance payments under the existing contract. It would also tackle inequality by creating better job opportunities and improve staff morale, as well leading to a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098well run\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098high quality\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is tremendous news. Unite has campaigned, lobbied and taken strike action to win exactly the points now agreed by Hackney council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt has been a tough campaign, but it has resulted in a great win that should send a clear message to other councils in London that the days of the flawed outsourcing business model are numbered,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have highlighted who really owns Apcoa and the large profits they make. We have said that \u00e2\u20ac\u0098in-house\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is better value for money for the hard-pressed council taxpayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have had to fight hard for better pay and conditions for the civil enforcement officers, including sick pay &#8211; a huge issue for those out working in all weathers during the pandemic,&#8221; Kasab continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur convenor and the Unite members deserve huge credit for patiently, but determinedly continuing the fight until victory was achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHackney council is now signposting the way forward.
