{"id":2540,"date":"2014-12-18T15:26:48","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T15:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2540"},"modified":"2014-12-18T16:55:18","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T16:55:18","slug":"addicted-austerity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2540","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAddicted to austerity\u00e2\u20ac\u0165"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Local councils, which have already suffered years of funding cuts under the coalition government, will be forced to brace for even more, as it was announced today (December 18) that local authority budgets would be slashed by a further 6.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nSince 2010, local authorities have seen their funding plummet by almost a third\u00e2\u20ac\u201d27 per cent\u00e2\u20ac\u201daccording to the National Audit Office (NAO). As with nearly every aspect of public life in the UK under the current government, it is the poorest areas that are being hit the hardest by these local authority cuts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLocal councils are already at breaking point with services being cut to the bone or stopped completely,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite national officer Fiona Farmer, in response to the government announcement. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMany are staring into the financial abyss of bankruptcy because of this latest round of cuts which will eat into key services we all rely on.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLocal government needs a fair funding settlement,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is simply not sustainable to expect councils serving some of the poorest communities in the country to bear the brunt of the Tory-led government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s addiction to austerity.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe NAO also found that by 2015, local authorities will see their funding reduced by a whopping 37 per cent in real terms.<br \/>\nNow, half a million fewer people employed by local authorities will be serving their local communities than when the coalition government came to power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-30520065\">A BBC analysis<\/a> found that in 2011, for the first time in living memory, central government became larger than local government and the trend continued in the following years.
