{"id":2550,"date":"2014-12-19T08:00:51","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T08:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2014-12-18T16:26:23","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T16:26:23","slug":"bah-humbug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2550","title":{"rendered":"Bah humbug!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>While consumers of the world famous Barbour jacket may be in the Christmas spirit, the manufacturer is anything but, as it threatened to ban its striking workers from the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Christmas party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe workers, Unite members, based in Gateshead at J Barbour and Sons Ltd, began their first day of strike action yesterday (December 18) over forced changes to their contracts, which includes introducing a requirement to work until 23:00, as well as the reneging of the unsocial hours payment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nStriking workers argue that the changes to their contracts represent a bid to lower their terms and conditions to the status of temporary employees, without showing any consideration for employees with caring responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s behaviour is especially appalling considering Barbour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mission statement, which supposedly aims to build a business honouring \u00e2\u20ac\u0098family values\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098effective working relationships\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 based on \u00e2\u20ac\u0098respect\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 while supporting workers to work \u00e2\u20ac\u0098collectively towards common goals.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe spiteful behaviour of Barbour to ban workers taking industrial action from their Christmas party sums the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s attitude up,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Fazia Hussain-Brown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bStaff have worked hard to make the Barbour brand a global success and feel betrayed by the attacks on terms and conditions which are designed to squeeze out yet more profit,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey are actions that Scrooge would be proud of and show a total disregard for people with caring responsibilities. Barbour needs to enter the Christmas spirit and negotiate a fair deal for its workforce.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe Unite members went on strike yesterday from 07am to 1pm.
