{"id":2596,"date":"2015-01-05T15:50:23","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T15:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2015-01-05T15:50:23","modified_gmt":"2015-01-05T15:50:23","slug":"passport-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2596","title":{"rendered":"Passport to safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Cowboy fuel tanker operators face being driven off the road as a new Petroleum Driver Passport (PDP) covering over 6,000 tanker drivers across England, Scotland and Wales came into force on January 1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The passport, implemented by the Downstream Oil Industry Distribution Forum \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a partnership of employers, industry bodies and Unite, aims to drive up health and safety standards and will see fuel depots and refineries refusing to load tankers whose drivers do not hold a PDP.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year several thousand tanker drivers have completed the training accredited by Scottish Qualifications Authority to obtain the passport which covers the safe delivery of petrol and diesel to the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s forecourts.<br \/>\nTraining is a mixture of classroom and practical learning. The passport is renewed on a five year cycle, but also has an annual refresher requirement. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bDrivers working for cowboy operators often have little or no idea of the equipment they are supposed to use,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Unite national officer Tony Devlin said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the equipment is not properly understood, or the inflammable nature of the product being delivered, then a serious incident or explosion could occur.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe petroleum driver passport is a real success for our members in helping halting the race to the bottom and drive up standards in health and safety. It will ensure professionalism and bring about stability to a vital, but increasingly fragmented industry which has over 300 contractors in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe new system should discourage cowboys and low cost operators who come into to the industry to make a quick buck and then get out again.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland agreed. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe passport has come about because two years ago, Unite fuel tanker drivers alerted the industry, the public and the government to the dangers posed by the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098race to the bottom\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that was happening in the fuel tanker distribution industry,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Petroleum Driver Passport covers health and safety and training standards and was a major part of the Acas agreement the Unite reached with employers.
