{"id":26587,"date":"2020-11-18T13:51:41","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=26587"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:35:11","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T14:35:11","slug":"minister-must-retract-chlorine-chicken-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=26587","title":{"rendered":"Minister must retract chlorine chicken claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Secretary of state for the environment George Eustice must withdraw his\u00c2\u00a0<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098<\/em>worrying and incorrect\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0claim that USA poultry farms \u00e2\u20ac\u0098don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use chlorine much anymore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, which has raised concerns about the sincerity of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post-Brexit food promises, Unite has said.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Eustice made the claim while being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/radio\/show\/20201115-3876\/2020-11-15\">interviewed on Times Radio<\/a>&nbsp;on Sunday (15 November).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked about prospective USA secretary of state&nbsp;senator Chris Coons&#8217; comments that the UK and US will have to come to an agreement over chlorinated chicken in order to strike a trade deal, Mr Eustice said:&nbsp;\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUS farms don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t actually use chlorine much anymore \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an old technology from the 1970s.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Mr Eustice\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments, American food industry trade unions confirmed to Unite that washing chicken in chlorine is still widely practised throughout the US poultry industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathogen reduction treatments (PRTs), of which chlorine is one, are common throughout US poultry processing.\u00c2\u00a0The UK and EU have banned poultry processed with PRTs because their use allows for laxer hygiene and quality standards during farming and processing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Mr Eustice reiterated that the UK ban on such produce is going to stay in place, Unite warned the minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments appear to downplay the issue and have raised concerns that the government could break its promise in order to achieve a deal with the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite national officer Bev Clarkson said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMr Eustice&#8217;s claim that USA poultry farms don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use chlorine much anymore is worrying and incorrect \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sister unions in America have\u00c2\u00a0confirmed to us that quite the opposite is true.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are calling on the minister to withdraw his comments so that consumers are in no way misled about the prevalence of chlorinated chicken in the USA and the chances of such produce ending up on British plates if market access is granted.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNot to do so will increase concerns that Mr Eustice\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments are an attempt to soften public perception on this issue so that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pledges can be broken later on.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is particularly needed following the passing of the Agriculture Bill last week, which contained a last-minute sop from ministers on protecting food import standards. In reality, there is nothing contained in the bill to stop a determined government allowing substandard produce into the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs a union we are disturbed by the treatment of poultry workers in the USA and are\u00c2\u00a0well aware that\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/labourlist.org\/2020\/11\/we-must-put-food-workers-rights-on-the-menu\/\">exploitation of UK poultry workers would worsen<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0if the government chooses to go back on its word.
