{"id":26871,"date":"2020-12-07T14:29:18","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T14:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=26871"},"modified":"2020-12-07T14:36:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T14:36:18","slug":"huge-back-pay-victory-for-refuse-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=26871","title":{"rendered":"Huge back pay victory for refuse workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Unite has secured a huge pay victory for forty refuse workers winning them substantial back pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The refuse workers, employed by employment agency Templink and engaged by Serco on Sandwell council&#8217;s outsourced refuse collection contract, will now receive back pay of between \u00c2\u01412,000 and \u00c2\u01417,000 and Unite is working to ensure that the money is paid before Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workers, who have been working on the contract for up to two years, have been paid at a lower rate than permanent staff. Under the agency directive rules they should receive the same rates of pay as permanent staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the back pay, the workers will also receive a substantial increase in their hourly rate. Drivers will receive an additional \u00c2\u01412.29 an hour, while loaders will see their pay increase by \u00c2\u01411.70 an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is an excellent victory for this group of agency workers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Simon O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Keeffe, Unite regional officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe agency workers undertake exactly the same roles as permanent staff and they deserve to receive the same rates of pay,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The underpayment case has been championed by local rep Deb Melia, who is a refuse driver. She has been pursuing the underpayment since May this year with Sandwell council.
