{"id":27250,"date":"2021-01-04T13:38:34","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T13:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=27250"},"modified":"2021-01-04T16:46:39","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T16:46:39","slug":"mccluskey-pm-now-has-nowhere-to-hide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=27250","title":{"rendered":"McCluskey: PM now has nowhere to hide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Commenting on the vote by MPs (held on Wednesday, December 30)\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0pass\u00c2\u00a0the deal that will now govern the trading arrangements by the UK and the European Union, the general secretary of the country&#8217;s leading trade union, Unite,\u00c2\u00a0Len McCluskey, said Unite would be holding PM Johnson to his promise \u00e2\u20ac\u0098of a brighter future for this nation.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur people are going through a time of immense anxiety, buffeted by the enormous\u00c2\u00a0twin challenges of the exit from the EU and the fatiguing, continuing\u00c2\u00a0battle against a raging super-virus,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said McCluskey.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey\u00c2\u00a0needed to see Parliament deliver some measure of\u00c2\u00a0stability to our country, however marginal. While this deal is very far from ideal, and this union will be fighting night and day for improvement,\u00c2\u00a0it is at least\u00c2\u00a0an end in part to the past years of chaotic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthis is not a moment for ugly\u00c2\u00a0triumphalism from the government or some MPs. Far from it \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as very serious and justifiable concerns were aired today about Boris Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s deal, many of which this union shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs Unite has said repeatedly, this deal is very much a floor, not a ceiling,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he stressed. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is an enormous amount that must be done to ensure that this deal does no harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the government has\u00c2\u00a0any sense it will have listened carefully to the points made today and\u00c2\u00a0will reach out immediately to work with industry and unions to ensure that\u00c2\u00a0the Prime Minister makes good on his repeated promise that UK\u00c2\u00a0jobs and living standards won&#8217;t simply be\u00c2\u00a0protected but become among this best in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Prime Minister now has nowhere to hide. This is his deal, his\u00c2\u00a0promise of\u00c2\u00a0a brighter future for this country.
