It contained only a tin of beans, a bag of pasta, a single tomato, two jacket potatoes, enough bread and cheese for eight single cheese sandwiches, and a handful of carrots, apples, Soreen malt loaf bars, and Frubes yoghurt tubes.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeSchoolMeals?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeSchoolMeals<\/a> bag for 10 days:<\/p>\n<p>2 days jacket potato with beans<br>8 single cheese sandwiches<\/p>\n<p>2 days carrots<br>3 days apples<br>2 days soreen<br>3 days frubes<\/p>\n<p>Spare pasta &amp; tomato. Will need mayo for pasta salad.<\/p>\n<p>Issued instead of \u00c2\u014130 vouchers. I could do more with \u00c2\u014130 to be honest. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/87LGUTHXEu\">pic.twitter.com\/87LGUTHXEu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d Roadside Mum \u0111\u017a\u0090\u017b (@RoadsideMum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoadsideMum\/status\/1348646428084760576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mum, posting under the Twitter handle Roadside Mum, calculated how much she would have spent if she bought these items at her local Asda and it totaled only \u00c2\u01415.22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIssued instead of \u00c2\u014130 vouchers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she wrote on Twitter. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI could do more with \u00c2\u014130 to be honest.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPublic funds were charged \u00c2\u014130,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d have bought this for \u00c2\u01415.22. The private company who have the free school meals contract made a good profit here.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Footballer and child poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford MBE, <a href=\"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/marcus-rashford\/\">who successfully lobbied the government to continue free school meals <\/a>over the Christmas and summer holidays, also took to social media to express his outrage and highlighted other pictures of woefully inadequate free school meal parcels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJust not good enough,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he wrote, adding, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThen imagine we expect the children to engage in learning from home. Not to mention the parents who, at times, have to teach them who probably haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t eaten at all so their children can&#8230;We MUST do better. Schools were told to only use vouchers if it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t possible to put together food parcels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The change in policy from vouchers to predominantly food parcels \u00e2\u20ac\u201c provided by private companies, including Chartwells, owned by food service giant Compass, a known Tory donor \u00e2\u20ac\u201c has been influenced in part by critical Tory MPs who contend vouchers are abused by families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tory MP Ben Bradley, who voted against the extension of free school meals over the holidays, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2020\/oct\/24\/ben-bradley-under-pressure-to-apologise-over-free-school-meals-tweets\">said back in October<\/a> that free school meal vouchers given last summer \u00e2\u20ac\u0098effectively\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 went to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098crack dens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098brothels\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour leader Keir Starmer slammed the latest revelations of food parcels provided by private companies like Chartwells, noting, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe images appearing online of woefully inadequate free school meal parcels are a disgrace. Where is the money going? This needs sorting immediately so families don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t go hungry through lockdown.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite Community national co-ordinator Liane Groves likewise criticised the latest free school meals scandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is outrageous that while struggling households are expected to make do with shockingly inadequate free school meal parcels, private companies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Tory donors no less \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are profiteering from their misery,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is absolutely unacceptable and must be investigated with urgency, and the government should drop its food parcel-first approach,&#8221; Groves added. &#8220;Free school meal vouchers given directly to families are a much more effective way to ensure that children are fed nutritious meals that suit their specific needs, instead of relying on private companies looking to make a quick buck.&nbsp; No one should be profiting from hunger.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Hajera Blagg<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A company with Tory links contracted to supply free school meals has outrageously short-changed struggling families, with food parcels that are meant to be worth \u00c2\u014130 only containing food worth little more than \u00c2\u01415.
