In the Rotunda where once<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lincoln and Kennedy lay in state<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rioters carrying confederate flags<\/p>\n\n\n\n

spat in the eyes of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

He craved power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flames of sedition<\/p>\n\n\n\n

lit by a crowd<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dangerously devoted to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

They were beaten. He is beaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power is with the poet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

With tears in their eyes an audience<\/p>\n\n\n\n

weary of division and hate heard<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her poem, a poem of inspiration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a poem of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Transfixed, past Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and President Biden were as one<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enthralled by the poet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her words of harmony and of endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strength weakened<\/p>\n\n\n\n

left by the back door<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the sun of Palm Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The golf courses of Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The poet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s poem the Hill We Climb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

spoke to the American promise – her promise;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With every breath from my bronze- pounded<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

chest, we will raise this wounded world into<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

a wondrous one.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
