{"id":27778,"date":"2021-02-11T14:35:54","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T14:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=27778"},"modified":"2021-02-11T14:35:55","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T14:35:55","slug":"unite-welcomes-labour-support-for-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=27778","title":{"rendered":"Unite welcomes Labour support for aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite welcomed Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call today (February 11) for the government to introduce a sector specific support package for aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Labour made its call\u00c2\u00a0for the government to urgently\u00c2\u00a0come forward with a sector support package, while raising serious concerns about the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hotel quarantine policy.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hotel quarantine policy\u00c2\u00a0is expected to further suppress passenger air travel. Even before the policy was announced, passenger numbers were already just 4 to\u00c2\u00a05 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLabour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call for the government to introduce a support package for the aviation sector will be warmly welcomed by aviation workers throughout the UK,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAviation can and will swiftly begin to recover once the most intense impact of the pandemic lessens, but thousands of workers who worked in the sector have already lost their jobs and thousands more fear being made redundant before things begin to improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe first priority for the government is to immediately announce that it will prolong the furlough scheme. Unless it is extended, thousands of jobs will be needlessly lost because aviation will not be in a position to recover in the current timeframe.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>She concluded, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSupport for aviation cannot be piecemeal. Recovery in the sector,\u00c2\u00a0which is critical to the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economic success, will only be secured if the government provides a comprehensive sector specific support package.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>Unite is calling for the government to adopt a sectoral plan for aviation, which will encompass the economic and fiscal measures needed to support the sector.
