Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 2021 pay offer to staff \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a 20p increase to \u00c2\u01419.50 an hour \u00e2\u20ac\u201c has been \u00e2\u20ac\u0098put to shame\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by Morrisons\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pledge to pay workers \u00c2\u014110 an hour from April, Unite said today (February 26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite, the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading union, branded the profitable company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s offer to staff \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who have risked their health to keep the nation fed during the pandemic \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u0098pathetic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union, which represents around 9,000 Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers, said the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0098PR friendly plan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to pay small bonuses will cause reductions and interruptions to the in-work benefits that many of its low paid staff rely on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of a bonus system, Unite called on Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s to match Morrisons\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 more generous offer and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098give staff the proper pay rise they deserve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last three and a half years, Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers have only had a 3.3 per cent pay increase on base rates, while all other payments, such as shift and public holiday premiums, have been frozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite national officer Bev Clarkson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOver the last year, Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s staff have risked their health to keep the nation fed. They kept Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s coffers full as they did so, even as other businesses were going to the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s has decided to repay its workforce\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s loyalty and hard work by offering them a pathetic 20p increase to \u00c2\u01419.50 an hour, which is put to shame by Morrisons\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 commitment to pay all its workers \u00c2\u014110 an hour,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNor, as the company insists, does providing small bonuses to staff make up for the low pay on offer. These bonuses will cause reductions and interruptions to payments of universal credit and working tax credits that many Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s staff rely on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInstead of a PR friendly plan to offer bonuses, Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s should match Morrisons\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pledge and give staff the proper pay rise they deserve.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n
