Maintenance workers at the St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s housing charity will begin indefinite strike action\u00c2\u00a0from Thursday 22 April\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0response\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098appalling treatment\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0by senior management, Unite said today (Thursday 8 April).<\/p>\n

The all-out strike follows a warning in March by Unite, which has more than 500 members at St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, that a\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098bullying and anti-union culture\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0amongst the management at the London-based charity needed to be addressed.<\/p>\n

St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s staff staged walk-outs last year, in part due to the charity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0unbalanced and unfair use of disciplinary procedures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unite pointed to the\u00c2\u00a0targeting of\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a044 per cent of workplace reps at the charity, who are currently\u00c2\u00a0engaged in formal processes concerning their own employment, as evidence of\u00c2\u00a0an\u00c2\u00a0anti-union\u00c2\u00a0bias\u00c2\u00a0by management.<\/p>\n

Staff relations have become so bad within St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s property services department that 12 Unite members will begin indefinite strike action on\u00c2\u00a022 April.<\/p>\n

The\u00c2\u00a0strike was called after a number of staff grievances against property services senior management were dismissed.<\/p>\n

Unite said these claims had not\u00c2\u00a0been properly investigated and that a workplace representative is now being unfairly\u00c2\u00a0subjected to disciplinary proceedings\u00c2\u00a0as a direct result of raising the initial grievance.<\/p>\n

St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s property services department is responsible for the day-to-day repairs for the charity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 3,200 units, which are\u00c2\u00a0located in\u00c2\u00a0London, Bristol, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bournemouth, Brighton\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0Reading.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s concerns at the bullying and anti-union culture amongst St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management have only grown since we first brought them to the attention of the charity,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite regional officer Steve O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell.<\/p>\n

Reps targeted \u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe believe our reps are being targeted with formal procedures to prevent them from being able to stand up for staff, who are also suffering from management\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hostile approach.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA prime case in point is within the property services department, where staff have had no choice but to launch indefinite strike action because of appalling treatment by management.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt the moment, strike action is contained to one department. But unless there are significant efforts from St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management to improve staff relations and halt the targeting of our reps, staff anger could grow to levels that caused mass\u00c2\u00a0walk-outs\u00c2\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is keen to work with St Mungo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s to resolve this dispute, but that can only be done if management acts\u00c2\u00a0on staff concerns and stop targeting union reps,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he concluded.<\/p>\n
