{"id":28410,"date":"2021-04-12T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T14:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=28410"},"modified":"2021-04-12T15:39:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T14:39:14","slug":"strength-and-solidarity-of-members-hailed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=28410","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Strength and solidarity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of members hailed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Strikes at aerospace parts firm SPS Technologies have been called off after a deal was reached to end \u00e2\u20ac\u0098fire and rehire\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 threats that would have resulted in its Leicester staff losing up to \u00c2\u01413,000 a year, Unite said today (Monday April 12).\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Out of around 200 Unite members at SPS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Barkby Road site, more than 90 per cent voted to accept the deal, which sees the initial reductions proposed by the company slashed by more than half.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new agreement covers a range of terms and conditions (T&amp;Cs), including overtime pay, sick pay, paid breaks and shift premiums.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SPS workers have taken more than 10 days of strike action since 12 March but will now return to work as normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bStriking in the midst of the economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic is not an easy thing to do,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite regional officer Lakhy Mahal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut our members would not roll over and accept SPS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fire and rehire demands.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir strength and solidarity has resulted in a deal that protects their incomes and that allows them to return to work with their heads held high.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFire and rehire is a blight that is taking hold in workplaces across the country, as employers look to take advantage of the pandemic and its aftermath to target workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay and T&amp;Cs.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is there to help fight off these attacks, but the union can only assist in workplaces where it has a membership.
