Unite today (Thursday April 15)\u00c2\u00a0called on\u00c2\u00a0the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham and the Mayor of London,\u00c2\u00a0Sadiq\u00c2\u00a0Khan to publicly back a declaration to outlaw fire and rehire on bus services.<\/p>\n

Activists delivered the declarations to London\u00c2\u00a0City Hall (SE1 2AA )\u00c2\u00a0and the\u00c2\u00a0Greater Manchester Mayor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s office at 1.00pm today.<\/p>\n

The\u00c2\u00a0Go Ahead group\u00c2\u00a0which owns\u00c2\u00a0bus services in London and Manchester (Go North West) is using the disgraceful\u00c2\u00a0fire and rehire\u00c2\u00a0tactic to attack Manchester bus drivers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay and conditions. Other bus workers could face a similar fate unless the leaders of London and\u00c2\u00a0Manchester\u00c2\u00a0act.<\/p>\n

The Mayors have the power to outlaw fire and rehire by barring employers which use this immoral\u00c2\u00a0tactic from bidding for bus\u00c2\u00a0contracts\u00c2\u00a0controlled by Transport for London and Transport for Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

Over 400 drivers in Manchester\u00c2\u00a0have been on all out strike since Sunday February 28.\u00c2\u00a0Go North West\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fire and rehire plans mean bus drivers will be forced to work longer for no additional pay.<\/p>\n

Go North West is expecting its drivers to undertake 130 hours of unpaid work per annum, resulting in drivers being \u00c2\u01412,500 a year worse off.\u00c2\u00a0Go North West is also\u00c2\u00a0intent on tearing up the existing sick pay policy, which will result in a 67 per cent cut in sick pay for workers with over five years\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 service.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToday we are calling on Andy Burnham and\u00c2\u00a0Sadiq Khan to publicly back a declaration which bars employers who use\u00c2\u00a0fire and rehire from bidding for future contracts in the great cities of\u00c2\u00a0London and Manchester,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite executive officer Sharon Graham.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWarm words in support of\u00c2\u00a0the bus drivers in Manchester who are under attack are simply not enough and workers in London could be next. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to act,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n

Concluding, Graham said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt’s obviously wrong for companies to sack workers and then\u00c2\u00a0re-hire them on inferior terms and conditions. Workers need more than words of sympathy.\u00c2\u00a0While the government drags its heels, the Labour Mayors of Manchester and London must lead the way\u00c2\u00a0by\u00c2\u00a0using their powers to outlaw fire and rehire on their watch.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
