{"id":28959,"date":"2021-05-17T11:30:49","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T10:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=28959"},"modified":"2021-05-18T10:31:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T09:31:54","slug":"paltry-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=28959","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Paltry offer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Unions representing 750,000 council and school support staff across England, Wales and Northern Ireland criticised a recent 1.5 per cent pay offer made by the Local Government Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GMB, Unite and UNISON submitted a joint pay claim to the local government employers in February for a 10% pay rise. This would be payable from April 1, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unions say the joint claim represents a decent wage rise that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s both necessary to put a stop to poverty pay in local government and schools, and recognises the crucial role played by staff during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite national officer for local government Jim Kennedy said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis offer fails to recognise the legitimate aspirations of our members who have seen 25 per cent wiped from their pay packets during a decade of Tory council cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey are key workers who have kept services running smoothly during the pandemic and well-resourced councils are critical to the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098levelling up\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis paltry offer will be debated by our special national local government committee next week which will decide the way forward in the campaign for pay justice.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNISON head of local government Jon Richards added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a disappointing offer, especially after a year in which council staff have done so much to help local communities gripped by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCouncil staff will feel that their efforts over the past 15 months haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t been recognised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnions will now discuss the offer with their national local government committees before formally responding. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll want the employers to think again and come back and negotiate an offer that better reflects the worth and value of the dedicated school and council workforce.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, GMB national secretary Rehana Azam said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members in local government have kept schools and councils across the country going throughout this pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re extremely disappointed with this offer and doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t meet the pay claim we set out for \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which was a substantial increase,&#8221; she added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will now meet with our senior reps on Monday, decide how to respond and demand immediate talks with the employers.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GMB, UNISON and Unite will now consult with their national committees before deciding on their next steps.
