London lettings services firm Goodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reputation is\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098in tatters\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0after more than three months of strike action over \u00c2\u01416,000 pay cuts, the hostile targeting of striking workers and the loss of its Living Wage Foundation accreditation, Unite said yesterday (Wednesday 19 May).<\/p>\n

More than 20 members of Unite,\u00c2\u00a0employed in Goodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s referencing department, began strike action on 22 February over fire and rehire contract changes that resulted in\u00c2\u00a0annual pay falling\u00c2\u00a0from \u00c2\u014124,000 to \u00c2\u014118,000.<\/p>\n

In March, Unite wrote to The Living Wage Foundation urging it to end its accreditation of Goodlord over\u00c2\u00a0the cuts, which take wages to below the foundation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s London living wage of \u00c2\u014121,157.<\/p>\n

The foundation has since confirmed Goodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s is no longer accredited as a living wage employer.<\/p>\n

Referencing staff, who are the\u00c2\u00a0lowest paid at the company, are the only\u00c2\u00a0group\u00c2\u00a0of Goodlord’s workers\u00c2\u00a0to have been singled out for fire and rehire attacks.<\/p>\n

Unite is concerned that Goodlord could now seek to attack wages in other areas of the business now that it is not abiding by Living Wage Foundation rates.<\/p>\n

Indefinite strike action at Goodlord will continue into the summer.\u00c2\u00a0New strikes have been called following the dismissal and hostile targeting of union members while on strike, as well as Goodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s use of agency labour during the industrial action.<\/p>\n

Unite is demanding that those staff who have been dismissed after refusing to sign the new contracts following the expiration of their old contracts while on strike are offered their jobs back.<\/p>\n

Unite regional officer Steve O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bGoodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s refusal to do the right thing and back down on these poverty inducing pay cuts has left its reputation in tatters,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know Goodlord\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s clients are not happy at the situation and The Living Wage Foundation has ended the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s accreditation.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat is happening at\u00c2\u00a0Goodlord is exactly why fire and rehire, which is spreading through\u00c2\u00a0workplaces big and small across the country, needs to be outlawed.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGoodlord CEO William Reeve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s attempts to play hardball with union busting tactics are simply making the situation worse.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe understand that as chief executive\u00c2\u00a0at Goodlord, chairman of Nutmeg.com and a non-executive director at Dunelm, Mr Reeve is used to making decisions unopposed.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 resolve has only been strengthened by Mr Reeve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s refusal to negotiate and the underhand attempts to break the strike.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey have the full strength of their union, Unite, behind them and they are not going anywhere until Goodlord tables an acceptable offer.<\/p>\n

“Meanwhile, the fact Goodlord is no longer abiding by Living Wage Foundation rates\u00c2\u00a0raises the possibility of pay cuts in the company’s other departments.”<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFire and rehire\u00c2\u00a0is ripping through our workplaces like a disease.\u00c2\u00a0Weak law lets\u00c2\u00a0bad bosses force through brutal changes to contracts, sometimes\u00c2\u00a0taking thousands of pounds off wages that families need to get by.<\/p>\n

“It’s a disgraceful\u00c2\u00a0practice that’s outlawed in much of Europe and should be here.<\/p>\n

“Unite is fighting for UK workers to be treated with the same decency. We won’t stop until the law is changed to protect working people from attack.”<\/p>\n
