{"id":28978,"date":"2021-05-21T16:10:46","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T15:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=28978"},"modified":"2021-05-24T11:57:53","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T10:57:53","slug":"victory-for-the-workers-who-stood-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=28978","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Victory for the workers who stood firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite members who provided essential services during the height of the pandemic have voted to suspend their six week strike after ongoing talks with Thurrock Council delivered a breakthrough, it was announced today (May 21).<\/p>\n<p>Around 90 workers\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0waste and recycling department at Thurrock Council\u00c2\u00a0have been on strike since April 13, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The workers\u00c2\u00a0faced losing between \u00c2\u01411,200 and \u00c2\u01413,800 a year \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but the Council has now made positive changes to the original proposal\u00c2\u00a0which means members will not have a reduction to their pay.<br \/>\nThe workers will return to work on Monday, May 24. The result was welcomed by Unite regional officer Michelle Cook.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis deal is a victory for the workers who\u00c2\u00a0stood firm for six weeks in a strike to defend their pay,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Cook.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe workers, and the residents of Thurrock will be pleased that\u00c2\u00a0the council has amended its\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 plans, and services can get back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese essential workers, who\u00c2\u00a0were applauded for their work through the pandemic, now\u00c2\u00a0deserve to be applauded for the solidarity and determination they showed.
