{"id":2904,"date":"2015-01-30T15:03:21","date_gmt":"2015-01-30T15:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2904"},"modified":"2015-02-02T10:17:11","modified_gmt":"2015-02-02T10:17:11","slug":"democracy-many","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2904","title":{"rendered":"Democracy for the few, or for the many?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The concept of a democracy is a simple but powerful one \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in its most ideal form, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a state governed by the will of the people, a will that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s made clear when citizens vote in elections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, democracy as it functions in the real world, deviates, to a greater or lesser extent, from this ideal. In the UK, campaign finance influences election results. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a fact that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been proven time and time and again \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the more cash your party has, the greater the advantage come election time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the current political climate, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the Tories, the party of City fat cats and heirs to grand fortunes, who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got this undeniable edge \u00e2\u20ac\u201c some sources say the party out-funds Labour by a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/owa.unitetheunion.org\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=0ttUPDFkj0qmMZoN1NZMuFsdbaImENIIUtWF_pKNZTpieJIXknRyDLsilvSWlI27c38sKmdyM3c.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.thetimes.co.uk%2ftto%2fnews%2fpolitics%2farticle4135972.ece%3fshareToken%3d543e69ea40ef95a889ae124a462574ac\">jaw-dropping factor of 3 to 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite believes that this disparity cannot determine the outcome of the election if we are to honestly pride ourselves in a democracy that represents the interests of its citizens. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s executive council agreed to donate \u00c2\u01411.5m to the\u00c2\u00a0Labour party yesterday (January 29).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe union is determined that the present government should not be allowed to float to re-election on a tide of big business cash, while Labour remains under resourced,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the executive council noted in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to level the playing field, Unite may also consider additional support in the future. These donations are separate from Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s affiliation fees to Labour, which were halved in 2014 to comply with the recommendations of the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/owa.unitetheunion.org\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=0ttUPDFkj0qmMZoN1NZMuFsdbaImENIIUtWF_pKNZTpieJIXknRyDLsilvSWlI27c38sKmdyM3c.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.unitetheunion.org%2fnews%2funite-qa-on-what-next-after-the-collins-review%2f\">Collins Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Big business cash<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While Labour faces a resource disadvantage as the election approaches, the Conservative party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s coffers are steadily being filled by an elite class of wealthy, individual donors with vested business interests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, while Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s main source of funding comes from organisations that represent ordinary working people, the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/owa.unitetheunion.org\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=0ttUPDFkj0qmMZoN1NZMuFsdbaImENIIUtWF_pKNZTpieJIXknRyDLsilvSWlI27c38sKmdyM3c.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fblogs.channel4.com%2ffactcheck%2flabour-funding-party-donors-tories-factcheck%2f13899\">Tories get most of their funding from wealthy individuals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Research conducted by Unite has found that many of these donors are hedge fund bosses, including one Michael Hintze, who according to Forbes, is the 1,016<sup>th<\/sup>\u00c2\u00a0richest person in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hintze has donated a total of almost \u00c2\u01412m since the last general election in 2010. \u00c2\u00a0He has famously argued that he enjoys gifting money because, he says, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe more you give, the more you get.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Truer words were never spoken. In Toryland, the more you give, the more you do indeed get, as the case of Circle Holdings proves. The company has donated \u00c2\u01411.5m to the Tory party, so it may come as no surprise, then, that\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/owa.unitetheunion.org\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=0ttUPDFkj0qmMZoN1NZMuFsdbaImENIIUtWF_pKNZTpieJIXknRyDLsilvSWlI27c38sKmdyM3c.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.theguardian.com%2fsociety%2f2014%2fnov%2f19%2fprivate-firms-nhs-contracts-circle-healthcare-bupa-virgin-care-care-uk\">Circle was the biggest winner in the health service\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s systematic sell-off<\/a>, winning two contracts since April worth almost \u00c2\u0141300m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite general secretary Len McCluskey has argued that\u00c2\u00a0it is no coincidence businesses benefit from their donations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTory polices, from the sell-off of our NHS to tax cuts for fracking, benefit the hedge funds. We should never forget that the Conservatives govern on behalf of the millionaires, not the millions,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 McCluskey said late last year, after\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/owa.unitetheunion.org\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=0ttUPDFkj0qmMZoN1NZMuFsdbaImENIIUtWF_pKNZTpieJIXknRyDLsilvSWlI27c38sKmdyM3c.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.unitetheunion.org%2fnews%2fthe-tory-partys-friends-with-benefits-give-lie-to-grant-shapps-membership-spin%2f\">it was revealed<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that many Tory donors benefit directly from Tory policies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Circle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s CEO, Michael Kirkwood, is also advisory director for a transatlantic business group lobbying for TTIP, the EU-US trade deal threatening to further privatise the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other notable Tory donors include Alexander Knaster, a Russian-born American and head of Pamplona Capital Management, who has donated almost half a million pounds to the party since 2010, as well as Howard Shore, head of Shore Capital, who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s donated\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u0141543, 427 since the last election.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Rigged democracy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the only protection that we have from elections being bought outright is limits to campaign spending. But prime minister David Cameron has other ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right before the official start to the run-up of the election in May, Cameron quietly pushed through a change in the law that would increases spending limits by 23 per cent.
