{"id":29183,"date":"2021-06-16T15:38:33","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T14:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=29183"},"modified":"2021-06-16T15:38:35","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T14:38:35","slug":"premier-inn-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=29183","title":{"rendered":"Premier Inn protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Protests at Premier Inns in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland calling for staff to be paid the real living wage will be held tomorrow (June 17), the same day as parent company Whitbread\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual general meeting in Dunstable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite, which represents Whitbread workers in all grades and is the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading union, said its members are using the socially distanced protests to call for an end to the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098poverty pay culture afflicting the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union said that as the owner of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest hotel brand, minimum wage employer Whitbread could become the trendsetter for improved hospitality industry standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only would this benefit Whitbread but it would help to set a benchmark for the industry, allowing it to overcome the staff recruitment crisis that is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098hobbling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 the sector\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recovery from the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real living wage, based on the cost of living and set by the Living Wage Foundation, is \u00c2\u014110.85 in London and \u00c2\u01419.50 in the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around a third of Whitbread workers are paid the minimum wage of just \u00c2\u01418.91 and despite the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0098skill progression matrix\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, very few staff find it possible to achieve the equivalent of the real living wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most hospitality sector staff are paid the minimum wage, a situation that has contributed to well documented labour shortages across the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite national officer for hospitality, Dave Turnbull, said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have long campaigned for better pay at Premier Inn and for Whitbread to recognise and work with Unite to improve standards for staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite has and will continue to criticise Whitbread for its shortcomings: During the height of the pandemic, however, it has to be said that the company led the way by topping up furlough, so staff received 100 per cent of their wages, and by rowing back on excessive plans to slash 6,000 jobs,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOn the day of Whitbread\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s AGM, as its senior leadership and shareholders plot a course for recovery, our members are calling for an end to the poverty pay culture afflicting the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnless this happens, Premier Inn and Whitbread\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s other businesses will soon find themselves struggling with endemic labour shortages,&#8221; Turnbull continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBy becoming a Living Wage Foundation employer, Whitbread would also set an industry benchmark.
