{"id":2981,"date":"2015-02-06T14:15:31","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T14:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2015-02-06T14:15:31","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T14:15:31","slug":"stakes-incredibly-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2981","title":{"rendered":"Stakes are incredibly high"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><em>In part 5 of our series highlighting Voter Registration Week, UNITElive spoke to single mum, Alison, who knows exactly just how hard life has become under the coalition government.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison is one of almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gingerbread.org.uk\/content\/365\/Statistics\">2m single mothers and fathers in the UK<\/a>, and, as with so many people who must take on the twin roles of sole breadwinner and parent all day, ever day &#8212; time and money are scarce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a working mum raising a fourteen-year-old boy on my own,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Alison. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s definitely not an easy thing to do, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d say the challenges I face are almost entirely financial.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison lives in northwest London and works as a campaigns officer. Although she loves the work that she does, providing for herself and her son in one of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most expensive cities is a constant struggle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI live in private rented accommodation, and I pay roughly \u00c2\u01411400 a month on my rent \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about 60 per cent of my wages.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison is part of a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/property\/house-prices\/10663923\/Rise-of-Generation-Rent-as-home-ownership-hits-25-year-low.html\"> rapidly growing trend in private rented accommodation in the UK<\/a>. In the past decade, the number of people renting privately has almost doubled, from just over 2m in 2003 to almost 4m last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Protections for renters are scarce in a largely unregulated market, which means that Alison must face the scourge of sudden rent hikes, insecure tenancies and being at the mercy of potentially unscrupulous landlords.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s through these very personal struggles that Alison finds her rationale for voting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWithout the vote, people like you and me have absolutely no influence whatsoever. If I want something to change in my life and the lives of others like me facing similar struggles, then I have to vote for a party or candidate that will support policies that I believe in \u00e2\u20ac\u201c for example, rent controls.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison also notes that voting is a duty in a democracy, a right that many people throughout history fought for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWomen fought for the right to vote \u00e2\u20ac\u201c some died for it, so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s absolutely critical we way take part. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s how I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve raised my son, to believe that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only through participation that a democracy actually works the way it should.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison believes the stakes in upcoming election in May are incredibly high.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely going to be a very close election, which makes it all the more important that we get as many people as we can to get out and vote,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she explained. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf a government comes to power without a clear mandate from enough people who voted, then we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll have five more years of a government like the one we have now.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison says she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s experienced palpable differences in her life since the coalition government took the helm five years ago.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBefore the current government was in charge, I was able to go back to university and get a degree as a mature student, which has considerably increased my earnings potential,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe only way I was able to do that as a single mum was because of all the support from the government I was given. I would never have been able to do that now.
