{"id":3209,"date":"2015-03-06T15:08:22","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T15:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=3209"},"modified":"2015-03-09T10:26:12","modified_gmt":"2015-03-09T10:26:12","slug":"martyrs-worshipped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=3209","title":{"rendered":"Where the Martyrs worshipped"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The story of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tolpuddle_Martyrs\">Tolpuddle Martyrs<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c six farm workers imprisoned and transported to Australia for their attempt to prevent falls in their wages by forming a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfriendly society\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in 1834 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is the story of trade unionism\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birth in this country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe six men who ignited a movement are remembered in books and museum \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but a new site recently purchased for conservation will eventually give the public a unique insight into how, exactly, these humble men lived.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA grade II listed former Methodist Chapel built in 1818 in Tolpuddle, Dorset, and thought to be where at least four of the six Martyrs worshipped and three may have preached, was purchased last month by the newly formed Building Preservation Trust, supported by funds and advice from English Heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s agricultural branch based in Tolpuddle was delighted at the news of the purchase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nTony Gould of the Unite Tolpuddle branch noted that because the building will eventually be open to the public, a visit to Tolpuddle will be even more worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAlthough the TUC explains at the Martyrs Museum the industrial objectives the Martyrs had, their religious faith as Methodists underpinned their conviction as trade unionists,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Gould said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is also an important part of the story.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nEmergency repairs to stabilise the cob walls and to make the building wind and water tight commenced on February 17.
