{"id":3436,"date":"2015-03-24T12:17:16","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T12:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=3436"},"modified":"2015-03-24T12:17:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-24T12:17:16","slug":"the-struggle-for-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=3436","title":{"rendered":"The struggle for power"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A community and 270 people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s livelihoods have been put on 12 months\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 notice as Scottish Power announced yesterday (Monday 23 March) that it will be forced to bring Longannet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s closure forward to March 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite had previously called for both Scottish and UK government interventions to resolve a dispute between the company and the National Grid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 are now suffering because of an economic power struggle they had no say or control over, while governments at both Westminster and Holyrood effectively left them to the mercy of the market, said Billy Parker, Unite senior industrial officer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dispute, over the cost of transmission connection, an estimated \u00c2\u014140m, would have protected the immediate future of 270 direct jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLongannet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s closure is a disaster for the workers and the local area because these skilled jobs and supply-chain benefits cannot be replicated in the current economic climate,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Billy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The power station in Fife was due to be decommissioned in 2020 but this date has now been accelerated after losing out on a contract from the National Grid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The contract was to monitor electricity supply voltage and worth \u00c2\u014115m.
