{"id":3547,"date":"2015-04-02T14:06:20","date_gmt":"2015-04-02T13:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=3547"},"modified":"2015-04-02T14:06:20","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T13:06:20","slug":"attack-on-rural-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=3547","title":{"rendered":"Attack on rural communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Rural communities across Northern Ireland are under grave risk to their safety after Unite has discovered plans to severely cut road maintenance services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite representatives were informed that Transport NI management have proposed reducing the inspection of rural roads for potholes from three times a year to only once a year. Management has also planned to patch only the very worst potholes in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nAs the proposals now stand, only category R1 potholes, which require a 24-hour response, will be fixed, while other lower grade potholes, including grades R2 and R3, will be unlikely to be dealt with.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite regional officer Gareth Scott called the situation \u00e2\u20ac\u015bintolerable\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe impact of these cuts will be to directly threaten road safety and could cost lives throughout Northern Ireland,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bRoads Service workers will be impacted through likely reductions in staff, work and pay \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the union is concerned that the department\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future plans may be to outsource or privatise the service altogether.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nScott explained that the budget for materials will be restricted to \u00c2\u014150 per day per depot, which will mean that work requiring materials will be severely restricted. Workers will then be relegated to performing tasks such as road edging and outlets manual gully emptying, which don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t require materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe understand that there is no budget for the cost of salting roads in the coming winter,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Scott added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bApparently the department are relying on a reallocation from a future Monitoring Round for this funding.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite is currently discussing its response to Transport NI management.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut Scott warned that the cuts will affect more than just the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s members, adding that the slashing of services would amount to \u00e2\u20ac\u015ban attack on the quality of life for rural communities\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey will also impact the survival of businesses which will be forced to absorb the extra costs associated with an inadequate roads infrastructure,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rural communities across Northern Ireland are under grave risk to their safety after Unite has discovered plans to severely cut road maintenance services. &nbsp; Unite representatives were informed that Transport NI management have proposed reducing the inspection of rural roads for potholes from three times a year to only once a year.
