{"id":3704,"date":"2015-04-16T11:15:26","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T10:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=3704"},"modified":"2015-04-16T12:11:49","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T11:11:49","slug":"smurfit-kappa-strike-on-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=3704","title":{"rendered":"Smurfit Kappa strike on hold"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">The four day strike at corrugated packaging company Smurfit Kappa in Northampton, due to start on Friday (April 17), has been suspended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">This is to allow the appeals of the two sacked senior stewards to be heard on Friday. <\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">There will then be a mass meeting of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 108 members on Sunday (April 19) to discuss the outcome of the appeals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0Unite regional officer Mick Orpin noted that if the appeals were to fail, the strike \u00e2\u20ac\u015bremains very much on the cards. <\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">However,we are hopeful of a successful outcome, so we can rebuild relations with the company for the benefit of all,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">Unite members have already taken two days of strike action on April 1 and 2\u00c2\u00a0 in support of their two dismissed colleagues who stood up to the company over \u00e2\u20ac\u0098race to the bottom\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 contracts and alleged incorrect bonus payments, as <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/resolute-in-purpose\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">UniteLive reported recently<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">Unite members voted by 60 per cent for strike action and 73 per cent for action short of a strike over the dismissal of the first steward and the suspended second steward, since sacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\" style=\"margin: 1em 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt;\">Smurfit Kappa is one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging in the world, with about 42,000 employees across 32 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The four day strike at corrugated packaging company Smurfit Kappa in Northampton, due to start on Friday (April 17), has been suspended. \u00c2\u00a0 This is to allow the appeals of the two sacked senior stewards to be heard on Friday.
