{"id":3719,"date":"2015-04-16T15:42:46","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T14:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=3719"},"modified":"2015-04-16T15:42:46","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T14:42:46","slug":"ferry-service-under-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=3719","title":{"rendered":"Ferry service under threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Proposals that could see the closure of the Woolwich ferry, which has been free for more than a century, has been condemned by Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that the threat to the ferry, whose history stretches back to 14thcentury, comes from Transport for London (TfL) that is working on a package of new river crossings for south-east London -\u00c2\u00a0 one of which would result in the closure of the Woolwich Free Ferry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has 26 members -\u00c2\u00a0crew, electricians and road traffic teams \u00e2\u20ac\u201c working on the ferry service which carries more than 3,500 vehicles and 5,000 passengers a day across the Thames between Woolwich and Greenwich.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are very proud to be able to say that it is our members who run and maintain this fantastic service,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Onay Kasab.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Woolwich Free Ferry is not just a historic tradition \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is, in fact, a vital part of today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s capital transport infrastructure,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have members whose families have worked on the ferry for generations and Unite believes that the ferry should be there for future generations to use.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA free ferry is something that is worth campaigning to save and now we must all join together to fight to preserve it. Unite will be part of that fight.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A petition, begun only four days ago, has already garnered more than 7,000 signatures.
