{"id":4156,"date":"2015-05-14T16:22:19","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T15:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=4156"},"modified":"2015-05-14T16:22:19","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T15:22:19","slug":"work-with-us-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=4156","title":{"rendered":"Work with us call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s major supermarkets, which are suffering tough trading conditions, are being urged to work with the trade unions to secure the jobs, and terms and conditions of their respective workforces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which has more than 30,000 members in this sector, has written to the bosses of nine supermarket giants in the UK and Ireland, such as Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and Asda, for a personal meeting \u00e2\u20ac\u0098to explore more constructive avenues to secure jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite reps from the distribution and retail sectors are holding a summit in Salford later today (May 14) to discuss the current situation and formulate plans for increasing the pressure on the retailers to enter into constructive talks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Increasingly concerned<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members have become increasingly concerned over threats to their terms and conditions and job security,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 wrote Unite national officers for retail distribution Adrian Jones and Matt Draper as well as national officer for food Julia Long in their letter, adding that they are trying \u00e2\u20ac\u015bto establish a common view on securing a future for all.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The supermarkets Unite has written to include Asda, Co-operative Food, Marks &amp; Spencer, Morrisons,\u00c2\u00a0 Musgrave Retail Partners (Budgens),\u00c2\u00a0 Sainsbury, Spar and Tesco, as well as BWG Foods in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Supermarkets are going through grim times with profits plummeting, as the major players engage in a heated price war\u00e2\u20ac\u201c Tesco\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest profits before tax were down 68 per cent to \u00c2\u0141961m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The supermarkets in a bid to cut overheads have reduced workforces\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Morrison\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s employed 128,000 in 2012 and this was down to 119,000 two years later.
