{"id":4491,"date":"2015-06-17T12:48:20","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T11:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=4491"},"modified":"2015-06-17T12:48:20","modified_gmt":"2015-06-17T11:48:20","slug":"no-to-regressive-austerity-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=4491","title":{"rendered":"No to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098regressive\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 austerity policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>As the Northern Ireland power-sharing government faces a \u00c2\u0141600m black hole in its budget, the Treasury has offered to plug the gap with a loan in exchange for cuts to welfare and the public sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn the run-up to a Stormont debate yesterday, (June 16) shadow secretary of state for Northern Ireland Ivan Lewis argued that parties must accept the austerity measures laid out in the Stormont House Agreement, which was agreed in December but is now being opposed by Sinn Fein.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bParties need to understand that there will be no extra money coming from Westminster for welfare,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTherefore, if they are going to have a viable budget they are either going to have to make further savage cuts [to the executive budget] or they are going to have to reach an accommodation on welfare. I think it is time that they reached an accommodation on welfare.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ireland region secretary Jimmy Kelly argued that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbrutal austerity policies\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for Northern Ireland will wreak havoc on the region, criticising Lewis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 comments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMr Lewis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 intervention at this time is deeply unhelpful given the shadow that hangs over the future of the local devolved institutions,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite locally are very disappointed that he failed to consult with the trade union movement, in particular Unite, before making his contribution.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn Northern Ireland, Unite has played a leading role in the campaign to defeat the brutal austerity policies agreed by the parties in the Stormont House Agreement,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kelly added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese will see up to 20,000 public sector workers losing their jobs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one in ten of the public sector workforce \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in a self-defeating attempt to rebalance of the Northern Ireland economy and secure the savings necessary to lower the corporation taxes in Northern Ireland to compete with the rate in the Republic.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIndeed, <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/austerity\/\">as UniteLive reported<\/a>, lowering corporation tax in Northern Ireland to 12.5 per cent will cost hundreds of millions to implement, and, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifs.org.uk\/budgets\/gb2012\/12chap10.pdf\">as an IFS report notes<\/a>, could do more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nKelly pointed to the scale of public opposition to austerity policies, most<a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/pushed-to-the-wire\/\"> recently demonstrated on March 13<\/a>, when public sector workers across the region took mass strike action, joined by community members standing up against cuts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe entire trade union movement came together on March 13th in a magnificent display of cross-community unity against the devastating austerity policies which threaten to take Northern Ireland backwards and to undermine an already fragile economy,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis campaign continues as workers will not accept cuts which will devastate our public services and undermine demand within the private sector locally.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nKelly condemned the way in which the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 agenda has framed the debate on austerity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMr Lewis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 believes that because \u00e2\u20ac\u0098we failed to persuade the British people to vote\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for the Labour party, progressives should \u00e2\u20ac\u0098smell the coffee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and accept the Tory reform of hated reforms to the social welfare system,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHowever, rather than being a champion for regressive austerity policies which take no cognisance of the specific challenges posed by an economy transitioning from a destructive and divisive conflict, Mr Lewis would be better placed engaging with trade union and business leaders to identify how we can collectively bring forward a strategy to grow Northern Ireland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial base.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Northern Ireland power-sharing government faces a \u00c2\u0141600m black hole in its budget, the Treasury has offered to plug the gap with a loan in exchange for cuts to welfare and the public sector. &nbsp;
