Unite has urged the government to hurry over implementing the recommendations of the Airports Commission for Heathrow expansion or risk losing out to rival airports across the globe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Their report issued today (Wednesday July 1), shows that the expansion will not only boost Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s struggling economy but will create more than 70,000 new jobs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis option, with the safeguards provided, delivers the biggest boost to the economy and will create over 70,000 jobs,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Peter Kavanagh, Unite London regional secretary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt will also secure the livelihoods of over 100,000 people working at Heathrow and those tens of thousands in associated industries under this plan, which cements Heathrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s status as a world leader,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Peter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The commission today said it was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bclear and unanimous\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that Heathrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plan was the strongest case for future airport capacity, delivering the greatest strategic and economic benefits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis debate has never been about a runway, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been about the future we want for Britain. Expanding Heathrow will keep Britain as one of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s great trading nations, right at the heart of the global economy,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said John Holland-Kaye, the airport\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chief executive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The \u00c2\u014117bn expansion plan would mean 250,000 more flights a year, providing a \u00c2\u0141150bn boost to GDP over 60 years as well as creating more jobs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The report stressed that the plan was \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba fundamentally different proposition\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 from former plans to expand Heathrow, with the runway located further west and anticipated to have much less impact on local communities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur new plans have been designed around the needs of local communities and will meet carbon, air quality and noise targets, and provides the greatest benefit to the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s connectivity and its long-term economic growth,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Mr Holland-Kaye.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Peter Kavanagh warned that any further delay would risk Heathrow losing out to rival airports across the globe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government needs to show leadership and give the green light to Heathrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s expansion now,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kavanagh added.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While Mr Holland-Kaye promised to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcreate the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best connected, most efficient and most environmentally responsible hub airport\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
