The Unite communications department took home two awards at the TUC trade union communications awards on Tuesday night (July 7), including winner of the Best Feature category and a Highly Commended award for Best Photo\/Illustration.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Appearing in the March\/April 2014 edition of Unite Works<\/em>, the winning feature, We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re human beings too <\/em>by Barrie Clement, told of the struggles Eastern European workers face in a social and political climate that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s become increasingly hostile to immigrant workers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It featured the voices of several immigrant workers, including Unite activist Andrei Dudau, originally from Romania, who works at a food processing firm that primarily employs people from abroad.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Judges of the awards hailed the feature, calling it \u00e2\u20ac\u015ban important piece challenging prejudice against immigrant workers and the effect it has on their lives\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbrave and timely attempt to put migrant workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 voices centre stage.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Accepting the award from TUC president Leslie Mannaseh, Unite\u00c2\u00a0Works\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>editor Amanda Campbell thanked the judges for \u00e2\u20ac\u015brecognising the bravery of these workers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMost of all I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like to thank Andrei and the Unite members we spoke to for their openness and their courage,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hope that all immigrant workers everywhere in this country will wake up one day and not feel blamed for everything that’s wrong. It’s up to us in the trade union movement to help make that happen.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite senior graphic designer Doug Pouch was highly commended for his illustration \u00e2\u20ac\u015bLondon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bus Chaos\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a graphic that depicted how drivers employed by different bus operators can be paid different rates, even if they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re driving the same routes.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI was pleased we were able to create a graphic that made it simple for people to understand the disparities in pay for bus drivers working for different operators,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Doug (pictured with Leslie Mannaseh.)<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSometimes illustrations work and sometimes they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m glad this one did, as it highlighted an important issue in a way that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to understand.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite head of media and campaigns Alex Flynn, agreed.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe illustration really helped the media and more importantly the public understand a complex issue in an easy way,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt was widely shared on national news sites and also deployed across all our social media channels, effectively reaching millions of people. It really helped get our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 voices heard.”<\/p>\n

The judges called the illustration \u00e2\u20ac\u015ban intricate and effective illustration that uses the familiar London transport map.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt cleverly illustrates the pay injustice against which the union is campaigning,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the judges noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBold colours and a great slogan complete the effect.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wins this year at the TUC trade union communications awards follow several solid years of success. Last year, the department won the Best Campaign award and the year previous, Unite won Best Feature.<\/p>\n
