{"id":4825,"date":"2015-07-15T12:33:59","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T11:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=4825"},"modified":"2015-07-15T12:33:59","modified_gmt":"2015-07-15T11:33:59","slug":"onslaught-against-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=4825","title":{"rendered":"Onslaught against workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Union members from across shipbuilding and engineering today (July 15) slammed the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Trade Union Bill, as unjust and in favour of employers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moving an emergency motion, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said, the Bill was a pernicious, all-out attack on trade unions. Unions were facing, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe full onslaught of anti-trade union and anti-worker rights in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir proposals in the Trade Union Bill are nothing to do to make work fairer, they have nothing to do with re-balancing the economy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c make no mistake they are an all-out attack on trade unions, our structures and our right to exist.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 proposals to change the rules for industrial action ballots were aimed at making industrial action harder for workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c notably in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098essential services\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony explained that at least 40 per cent of workers entitled to vote taking part in a ballot for industrial action will now be required to vote with over 50 per cent voting in favour to take action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hypocrites<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know the Tories are hypocrites of the worst order \u00e2\u20ac\u201c many of their own MPs didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t achieve anywhere near that at the General Election \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but no amount of saying so is going to change their minds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this is an attempt to begin to wipe us out.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No one was safe. He warned, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf they get away with this, the clamour will be to move these rules into private industry.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The way forward for ballot participation was to have access to electronic balloting. Tony explained, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnions have pressed the government to look at introducing electronic balloting, as many people do in all walks of life, day to day \u00e2\u20ac\u201c including the Conservative Party itself!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSo it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ok for the Tories \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not ok for working people and unions who have to use a costly and postal ballot which is one step removed from sending a message by Morse Code!\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Bill would also create a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098scab\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s charter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c by allowing employment agencies to supply agency workers during an industrial dispute. Tony said this would \u00e2\u20ac\u015binevitably lead to increased tension in disputes where agency workers are used as scabs.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the attacks on trade union rights are also designed to damage the Labour Party too. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know the government will launch an attack on Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest source of funding by announcing plans to force all of union members to opt in to their political funds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe changes take us back to 1927 and the impact of the funding reforms, which will hit all existing members of Labour affiliated unions, will be far reaching revolving around a so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u015btransparent opt-in process\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for the political fund element of trade union subscriptions.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said these \u00e2\u20ac\u015bproposals amount to nothing more than a shamelessly partisan attack on the funding of the Labour Party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPolitical funds are already subject to approval being given in regular ballots by unions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tory hedge fund and multi-millionaire donors will face no similar restrictions, leaving boardrooms free to write hefty and blank cheques backing the Tory Party.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony concluded by warning of reports that the government plans to attack EU employment rights \u00e2\u20ac\u201c including the working time regulations and agency workers directive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe cannot sit back and watch this happen,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Union members from across shipbuilding and engineering today (July 15) slammed the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Trade Union Bill, as unjust and in favour of employers. &nbsp; Moving an emergency motion, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said, the Bill was a pernicious, all-out attack on trade unions.
