{"id":484,"date":"2014-08-06T08:39:59","date_gmt":"2014-08-06T07:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=484"},"modified":"2014-08-06T08:42:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T07:42:14","slug":"angels-battlefield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=484","title":{"rendered":"Angels of the battlefield"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Pictured are two lesser recognised but incredible heroes, Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker, who became known as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Women of Pervyse\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 from their work in setting up and running a front line first aid post in Belgium during the First World War.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When war broke out 18 year-old Mairi Chisholm and 29 year-old divorcee Elsie Knocker were volunteers with a flying ambulance corps sent to help the hard-pressed Belgian army.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite their unit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s valuable work, they realised the importance of treating the wounded for shock immediately, so the two of them set up a front-line first aid post in the Belgian village of Pervyse, north of Ypres.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Elsie was a trained nurse and gave nearly all of the medical attention, while Mairi spent most of her time driving the wounded to hospital, often in terrible conditions and under fire. The duo carried on their life saving work throughout most of the war, until they were badly gassed in March 1918 and had to stop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But there was \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a fairy tale\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 ending of sorts for Elsie.
