{"id":5014,"date":"2015-07-29T16:16:22","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T15:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=5014"},"modified":"2015-07-29T16:16:22","modified_gmt":"2015-07-29T15:16:22","slug":"when-life-beyond-work-ceases-to-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=5014","title":{"rendered":"When life beyond work ceases to exist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The number of people on zero-hours contracts, in which workers are not guaranteed any hours of work, is notoriously difficult to calculate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the scale of the zero-hours epidemic is not yet fully known, one thing is certain \u00e2\u20ac\u201c these casual contracts are quickly becoming the norm in our modern world of work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2015\/feb\/25\/zero-hours-contract-rise-staff-figures\">Office of National Statistics figures<\/a> released in February show that the number of zero-hours contracts has risen substantially over the past year, from 1.4m contracts in 2013 to 1.8m contracts last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the actual number of people on contracts guaranteeing no minimum hours is thought to be about 700,000, this figure obscures the fact that many workers are on casual contracts guaranteeing one or two hours a week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c an arrangement that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s essentially a zero-hours contract by another name.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tory government has claimed that zero-hours contracts afford workers flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But for Jen, a carer who has worked on such contracts for years, \u00e2\u20ac\u0098flexibility\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is only a one way street in favour of the employer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Weeks after starting her first zero-hours contract in 2013, Jen began experiencing health problems. Now they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve become so severe that she is too ill to work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWithin weeks of starting my first ever zero contract job I had started sleeping badly, waking in the night, jumping out of bed in a panic shouting in the night,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOne night I had a vivid dream that I had been called. When I tried to leave the house, my husband tried to stop me, but I didn&#8217;t even recognise him.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under zero-hours contracts, workers must go about their day as if life beyond work ceases to exist altogether.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One day, Jen was no more than five minutes into her 12 hour shift when she found out that her stepfather had suddenly died. To her employers, the devastating news did not matter \u00e2\u20ac\u201c she had to complete her shift.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI couldn&#8217;t walk out as the client depended on two carers at all times,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn the end I arranged my own cover but I was not in a fit state to work.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, she had taken two weeks off, without claiming holiday pay, to finalise her stepfather\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s funeral arrangements and take some time to grieve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut then they took shifts away for a further two weeks, forcing me to use my holiday pay just to be able to pay my bills,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Jen explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now unable to work, her anxiety has become so severe that she often vomits when she hears the phone ring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Just a number <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a horrible environment \u00e2\u20ac\u201c you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re just a number.\u00c2\u00a0 The employer doesn&#8217;t care about you, and if you don&#8217;t do what they want, they simply replace you.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jen warned those who may be enticed by some of the terms in zero-hours contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI think everyone needs to be aware that some [contracts] may make the pay look attractive \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I&#8217;ve been on nearly \u00c2\u014110 per hour and double on bank holidays and up to treble when they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re short on staff \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re unavoidably ill, if you have a family and can&#8217;t drop everything and arrange your life around their shifts, then you will find yourself without work,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn care work, if one of your clients dies, you can be without work for weeks and sometimes more. Agency workers are always replaceable and they make that clear.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s experience isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t an anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/DecentJobsDeficitReport_0.pdf\">According to a TUC survey and report<\/a>, workers on casual contracts are at much higher risk of being exploited.
