{"id":5353,"date":"2015-08-26T13:02:43","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T12:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=5353"},"modified":"2015-08-26T13:03:51","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T12:03:51","slug":"vibrant-festival-helps-fight-intolerance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=5353","title":{"rendered":"Festival fights intolerance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A vibrant festival shows that celebrating diversity and fostering equality can be fun and inclusive to everyone in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that was certainly the case on Saturday August 22 when Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial and community branches in Newry joined to support the Newry Pride Festival.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Union branches sponsored events, hosted a merchandise stall and conducted an LGBT survey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional equality officer, Taryn Trainor congratulated the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial and community branches on their progressive stance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMembers coming from a workplace and a community background are joining together to provide vital support to the vibrant Newry Pride Festival,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is proud that the local industrial branch has sponsored the range of exciting events which celebrate diversity and promote inclusion and equality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEach year this event gets bigger and better and it has already established itself as an exciting alternative to the Pride events held in the larger cities.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Support for diversity <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trainor believes, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bEquality is a vitally important issue for the trade union movement and this event offers us an opportunity to provide support for diversity alongside engaging potential new members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur branches have sponsored this event and set up a Unite stall offering free merchandise and information about membership. Our LGBT and women&#8217;s committee members were in attendance to show their support for what is always a very colourful parade and fun family day out,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she reported.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But, she added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSadly, some in society view difference as a threat and this can result in intolerance, alienation and violence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite stands resolutely against such behaviour which is bred by ignorance.
