{"id":5519,"date":"2015-09-07T13:26:21","date_gmt":"2015-09-07T12:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=5519"},"modified":"2015-09-07T13:26:21","modified_gmt":"2015-09-07T12:26:21","slug":"stonewalling-on-job-loss-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=5519","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Stonewalling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 on job loss talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Car components company, International Automotive Components (IAC), is refusing to discuss 45 potential job losses with Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite having 35 per cent of the workforce as members the company in Scunthorpe is hiding behind a strict interpretation of employment law, which requires 51 per cent membership to be involved in consultations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Unite has 135 members at the plant and believes involvement from the very start of discussions could prevent unnecessary compulsory redundancies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is just pedantic nit-picking when you are dealing with people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lives and futures \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and we call on the management to start discussions with Unite as a matter of urgency with a view to avoiding compulsory redundancies,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Richard Bedford.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company is one of Scunthorpe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest employers and Unite believes that refusing to discuss potential job losses announced at the end of August shows disrespect to the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are also fears of a hidden agenda and the company hiring agency staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur fear is that the agency staff will be kept on on inferior terms and conditions rather than the permanent staff, who will be forced out,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Bedford noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hiring agency staff on inferior terms and conditions and pay creates a two-tier workforce.
