{"id":5672,"date":"2015-09-14T16:03:35","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T15:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=5672"},"modified":"2015-09-15T11:06:58","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T10:06:58","slug":"take-heart-comrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=5672","title":{"rendered":"Take heart comrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let the Tory \u00e2\u20ac\u0098schoolboy bullies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 get you too despondent \u00e2\u20ac\u201c was Unite general secretary Len McCluskey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s message to a packed fringe meeting on the trade union Bill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Employment Rights\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 fringe last night (September 13) featured leading experts and speakers including John Hendy QC, Professor Keith Ewing and Len McCluskey.\u00c2\u00a0 New shadow chancellor John McDonnell spoke as did new SNP MP, Chris Stephens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In his contribution Len stressed his concerns over the need for secure workplace balloting. He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need to place secure workplace balloting much higher up on the agenda.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Len explained that provision currently existed for secure workplace ballots in certain situations \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the turnout was always higher than for out-dated postal ballots.\u00c2\u00a0 Len challenged prime minister David Cameron to explore this method of balloting further with the trade unions \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that is if they were really serious about getting higher levels of turnouts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not seeking confrontation with the government \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but if the government is intent on taking us on they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll find a powerful resistance is there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get too despondent. If the government applied its own threshold to its election result it wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be in power. It was elected by just 24 per cent of the whole electorate. And 64 per cent did not vote for this government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will stand up against bad laws. They can never defeat a united working class, a united trade union and Labour movement.
