TUC general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady addressed Congress yesterday (September 14) as she laid out the scale of the challenges working people face.<\/p>\n

 
\nWelcoming the new Labour leadership, she called on the party of working people to \u00e2\u20ac\u015blook sharp; pull together; and do what working people are crying out for her Majesty’s Opposition to do – get stuck in and oppose.<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bShow the grit, discipline and determination needed to win back economic trust, win back political power, and change Britain for the better,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n

 
\nO\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady pointed to the diverse crowd filling the hall in Brighton, paying tribute to the workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c NHS staff, educators, manufacturers, construction workers and more \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwhose labour creates the wealth on which Britain’s future depends.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe slogan for this TUC congress is great jobs for everyone,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat means fair pay. Secure contracts. Time to spend with your family. A voice at work and respect for a job well done.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 
\nBut she added that the challenge for today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trade unionists goes beyond fighting for a fair share of the wealth they create:<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBuilding a sustainable recovery. Raising investment and productivity,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bYes, and raising wages and living standards too.<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe want a practical plan to deliver fair shares and greener growth for all.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 
\nO\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady condemned growth-choking austerity and the trade union bill \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the twin evils that prove the present Tory government has no interest in supporting working people.<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Conservative Party no longer represents the interests of industry in general,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIts main purpose is to serve just one \u00e2\u20ac\u201c global finance. It’s become the political wing of the City of London.<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMoney – and only money – talks in today’s Conservative Party. The national interest trumped by vested interests. The common good sold for a quick buck.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 
\nBut O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady asserted that the government has \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwoefully miscalculated the resilience of working people and their unions\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in our collective bid to fight the trade union bill.<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLet me make it clear,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015band let’s send a message from this hall – with every ounce of our strength, we will oppose this trade union bill.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe say to every worker worried about their future; everyone who wants not just a job but a career; everyone who wants enough time to spend with the people they love; and a decent home to live in – join us,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady concluded.<\/p>\n
