Unite\u00c2\u00a0EC member\u00c2\u00a0Ivan Monckton spoke on behalf of the union at the Labour party conference on Wednesday (September 30) proposing an emergency motion on Syria.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is likely that very soon David Cameron will ask Parliament to authorise Britain to take military action in Syria,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Monckton reminded Conference that Cameron had previously proposed taking action in Syria before Ed Miliband forced him to back down.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remember \u00e2\u20ac\u201c had Cameron won that vote, ISIL \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the very people he now proposes to attack, would be even stronger today than they are,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he noted.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Prime Minister is making it up as he goes along,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Monckton added, arguing that the Labour Party \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmust take a more measured view\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

He spoke of the refugee crisis as thousands upon thousands flee their homes in the Middle East and Northern Africa escaping conflict.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe perilous journey made by tens of thousands of traumatised refugees, and the horror of the conflict in Syria, has become represented by the heart rending image of a small boy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s body washed ashore,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere was an outpouring of sympathy and action to help from ordinary people across the country. It shamed Cameron into action, little and late as it is.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But Monckton emphasised that we cannot allow this wave of human solidarity shown during the refugee crisis to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbe misused to drag the country into another Middle East war\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Sun had the audacity to carry a front page calling for military action with the headline \u00e2\u20ac\u0098For Aylan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt seems that there is no disaster in the Arab and Muslim world for which Rupert Murdoch\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s answer is not to drop bombs.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Monckton noted that British interventions at the behest of the US have only caused further destabilisation to the targeted regions, created more refugees and \u00e2\u20ac\u015buncounted civilian deaths.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

He said it was time to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbreak the cycle of war\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, adding that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bISIS has no better recruiting sergeant than western intervention in the Middle East.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow is not the time to blunder into a new war \u00e2\u20ac\u201c another illegal war – with untold human casualties, more death, destruction and chaos creating more refugees,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Monckton went on to say.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is time to get behind diplomacy to end the Syrian civil war and empower the people of the region to confront ISIS and its allies.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
