{"id":6143,"date":"2015-10-06T15:13:56","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T14:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6143"},"modified":"2015-10-06T15:13:56","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T14:13:56","slug":"vindictive-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6143","title":{"rendered":"Vindictive decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>As supermarket chain Lidl announced last month that it would be giving its staff in England, Wales and Scotland a significant pay rise, pledging to keep minimum rates in line with the Living Wage, it simultaneously denied its Northern Ireland workers the wage uplift.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nNow, it has been confirmed that a Lidl worker in Northern Ireland was dismissed after questioning the chain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s brazen pay discrimination on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe decision to dismiss this worker will have a devastating impact on the young person concerned,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Susan Fitzgerald. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bHis only crime was to post comments on Facebook questioning the fairness of Lidl pay policy, referencing details already in the public domain and which had already caused widespread public revulsion at the German-owned retailer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis vindictive decision by management demonstrates that Lidl is running scared of public opinion,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey know there is a widespread public revulsion over their unfair policy of paying workers in Northern Ireland less than they do workers in England, Scotland and Wales. This decision will only exacerbate that.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite has called a solidarity protest for pay equality outside Lidl on High Street, Belfast, this Thursday (October 8) at 5pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe union is also engaging with its legal counsel to bring forward a potential claim against Lidl\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay discrimination, as well as talking to local political leaders who have agreed to communicate their concerns directly to the supermarket giant\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s German senior corporate management team.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is no legal or moral justification for paying workers in Northern Ireland less than workers who do the same work in Britain,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Fitzgerald went on to say. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn trying to justify this position Lidl has sought to mislead the media by introducing the red-herring claim that they pay workers the UK Living Wage of \u00c2\u01417.85.
